I often use http://blogsearch.google.com to find blogs. I search a keyword and just go down the list of results, trying to post relevant comments along with my website domain. The problem is that most of these blogs seem to be inactive or unpopular. Am I supposed to keep posting comments across hundreds of blogs in order to get more inbound links to my site, or should I pick a popular blog and spend my time trying to become a prominent member of it’s community. I understand that it takes time, I just don’t want to waste my time doing something that won’t return results.

You can try narrowing down your list of where to post comments to sites with more authority. Alternatively, you should thing about what you are trying to achieve – inbound links – in reverse. For the amount of time you spend building links by commenting on other peoples blogs you should try creating meaningful content of your own that others want to link to. That way you are building your brand and its authority instead of just making comments away from your own site.
