Where should a company start in regards to mobile advertising and getting highly ranked?

Hi Alvin,
You know my history and success with publishing and advertising-based revenue models. Since that time, I’ve played around with some mobile apps that were focused on an advertising-driven business model and trying to learn the space.
As you know, the quickest way to success for those trying to reach the mobile audience is paid advertising, with either PPC or CPM. The biggest players are AdMob (acquired by Google and in legal review by FTC) and Quattro Wireless (recently acquired by Apple).
But you tagged this question with SEO and not SEM, which I think means that you want to know how to get your webpages search engine optimized for mobile browsers. Is that correct?
If so, my answer is: do the same things that rank you well for regular browsers and you’ll be fine. In my opinion, mobile browsing is still in it’s infancy. The war between Apple and Adobe, Blackberry buying a web browser company last year (new BB browser due out late summer to fall 2010 time period), HTML5 standards being widely supported now, and a few other factors lead me to believe that we have another year or so before we see consistency in browsers across platforms. As a result, I don’t think we have enough consistency in the market to worry about search engine optimization for only mobile browsers. I do think, however, that we need to begin thinking about it in the 8 to 12 months as the landscape continues to change. You’re clearly just ahead of the curve, Alvin! :)
Best,
Mike
