Tips for starting a SEO consulting company?

Well, it’s probably time I asked a question, huh?  I figured I should make it a good one!

So I have recently split from Roadside Multimedia in a mutual decision.  While it was an excellent company to work for, it was time to spread my wings.  So now I’m (sort of) on my own, and while I feel I have a pretty good handle on things, are there any tips you guys have for starting out?  My plan is to start fairly small, with local (western Washington) businesses and work up from there.

Thanks!

As a small SEO firm, I would suspect that it would be tough for you to steal business away from larger, established SEM/SEO firms like iProspect, etc.

If I were you, I’d look for a niche that you were passionate about…like Roadside has for dentistry. Whatever you love to do, see if there are companies that you could serve in that industry/market. Alternatively, perhaps you live in a touristy area and could help out your local economy by doing small business SEO and SEM. I find that when I’m passionate about something, I work harder and smarter at it — and it provides rewards that go beyond monetary compensation.

Also, contact me through Linkedin. I’m in western WA and might be able to help you find work.

I know your text is keyword heavy but many of your customers may not understand what search engine optimization is. You may want to use none geek speech. i.e.

Are you having problems with your website reaching customers?

Do you want more customers to find you easily when they search Google?

Do you want your website to attract more customers?

Good luck
