Should I use commas to separate meta keywords?

I’ve seen meta keywords like this:

<meta name=“keywordscontent=“cms, php, content management system, op” />

And like this:
<meta name=“keywordscontent=“cms php content management system open source” />
Which way is better?

I’ve been on the web for a while. Many years ago I worked as a consultant at then-Internet high flyer About.com. Marshall Simmonds who is currently an SEO-god and was just as SEO-godlike back then taught us not to use commas in the meta keywords tag. His logic was that if you don’t provide punctuation, then Google and other search engines were free to associate them as they please rather than locking the words into specific phrases. For example, “content management system” (rather than “content, management, system”) could become “content management” or “content system”.

I’ve stuck with this logic and built websites using this logic for years since. I’ve built numerous websites that ranked in the top 10 (page 1) of search results for millions of results. Was this beneficial in achieving those results? I think so, but I don’t have data to back up my statements. However, I can say that it didn’t hurt! :)

You should use meta keywords with commas but please pay attention to what keywords you use.

For example.

You have: cms, php, content management system, op

It’s not that great to add such broad terms about your keywords. You should be more specific and it will help you rank better. Content management systems alternatives, CMS written in PHP, the best content management systems written in php Are some good ways to define some keywords.

Cheers!
