New SEO client, how long should contract be?

If I’m bidding on a new client — to perform SEO work on a couple of website that he owns — what should be the time frame that I suggest for consulting?

I anticipate the initial work per website (consulting with client, keyword selection per page, website redesign/update, link building) will take between one and two weeks, but then I’ll need to have some ongoing effort to continue the link building and re-evaluate and refine the SEO results.

What do others do for the term of their SEO consulting?

Thanks!

In my opinion, it really depends on setting the expectation of the client.  Some clients want to see ranking increased, while others are satisfied with maintaining the same ranking yet converting more of the existing traffic.  Most of the time, my experience has been to do quarterly agreements with my clients and spell out the t/c’s of what to expect from a measurement/metrics.  Obviously, if I don’t meet those metrics, then there is a good chance they are not going to renew the quarterly agreement or possibly extend to an annual agreement.  Again, set the expectation for what the client will receive and tie it to their revenue, then you’ll be more apt to gain the trust and further business of the client.  For new clients, I also give them a 15-30 day trial run depending upon the client relationship and where I think I can take their site.

What awbrowni says here is very true – setting expectations – in my experience clients have a tendency to think that if they spend a few bucks on SEO then their site will magically appear on the top of the pile and stay there… ( if only it was that simple). It’s important to educate them to understand the difference between SEO and SEM, SEM is an ongoing programme of activities designed to increase the site profile whereas SEO is simply ensuring that the site meets the criteria set by the engines for efficient indexing.

Good luck with this, just remember one critical thing when quoting a client – if they are tight on price you may end up loosing money as the effort involved in both creating and marketing websites is much greater than many clients realize. I would prefer not to take on a client if they aren’t realistic about budgets, especially for ongong programmes of SEM
