I host my sites in Canada, but they are mainly targetted at the australian market – it does not appear to affect the pagerankings. However “where I host” could mean “where my servers are geographically” or “which hosting services I use” If for example you are on a shared host, one of the other sites may have been blacklisted which could negatively affect your rankings – it depends if the engine bases its ranking just on your domain name or If the ip address has some bearing ( which I believe it does )

Great point about the shared-hosting environment! What should one do until they are able to support (technically/financially) their own virtual or dedicated server to limit this sort of negative behavior from happening?

Well, interesting question – in fact a VPS or virtual private server is quite inexpensive these days – while you still use shared hosting infrastructure with a VPS you get your own dedicated IP address which is the important bit.

Having your servers in a different country from you shouldn’t effect search directly, but it could have an in-direct effect. For example, if you are in the UK and your servers are in the US, Google might have trouble with your geographical location, resulting in search results being more prominent in one country over another (although minuscule). However, it shouldn’t make a noticeable difference.
