How can I tell if an SEO service company is reputable? Yes, I know I can use a “big time” SEO company, but either a) their cost will be too high or b) they won’t care about me because I’m “small potatoes” to them.

These are just my thoughts, not necessarily a definitive answer:
- See what the principals' background and experience is. No information on their website about the principals? That could be a flag.
- See if they are members of SEMPO (www.sempo.com). It’s only a paid membership, but may indicate that they’re in SEO to continue their education and follow the industry closely, rather than just trying to milk unsuspecting clients.
- Don’t believe guarantees. If they have a guarantee on their website, run. There’s no possible way to guarantee SEO placement as Google and others change their algorithms regularly, and other sites rise and fall. Additionally, don’t let them confuse you with SEM — which is just paid marketing. Anyone can pay for top placement on any site if you have the \$.
- Ask for references. Call the references.
