What would be the minimum spend per time period for a consultant to generally be interested in working with a client?

I would agree with Alvin. In my experience agency fees can vary between 1-10% of spend. I’ve worked on smaller accounts (less than \$5,000 per month) which can sometimes be a challenge depending on the competition in the marketplace. When it comes to PPC there needs to be enough statistically significant data to make good decisions. If you used the \$5,000 per day spread over 30 days that equals \$166 per day in spend. And then spread that out among different campaigns… At an average CPC of \$1.00 that’s not a whole lot of data to work with. But again it depends on the goals and strategy of your client. That might work for some local search type engagements.

A typical media buy from an ad agency usually nets the agency 10% of the spend.
This is just to make the purchase, but is really a fee based upon the connections and buying power of the agency.
With PPC, anywhere from 10%-20% is reasonable from an agency. Individual consultants can be less but I would steer away from pay for performance or other “too good to be true” offers.
Also, for really low monthly budgets (< \$1000/month) you will most likely have a minimum amount.

.thimmer Our agency will start at a minimum of \$250/month. There is a setup cost associated with take over or setup of any new accounts (we start this at a minimum of \$800). As I stated above, we are a small agency so we can be competitive in the professional arena, however you can find individual consultants which may be more affordable. Just make sure to check references and qualify them before sending your money. With no regulation, this industry has its share of scams.

Cheryl,

I’ve seen anywhere from $150 – $800 per month.  I’ve also seen contracts that were based on paying a percentage of your Adwords spending of up 40%.  Yes, 40% and those are the contracts I would encourage you to steer clear of.  In my opinion, I think you should consider the following factors when managing your Adwords account or having someone else manage it:  number of products/services you’re promoting, number of relevant keywords, ad groups and campaigns you’re wanting managed, and the bid volatility of each.  Depending on the complexity and number of products/services, you’re probably looking at 2-3 hours of work to get setup if that.
