I am thinking of redesigning my website. It is an ecommerce store which sells baby products (clothes, cribs, blankets, etc). How can I design it to be SEO-friendly from the get go?
Thanks!

There are many ways to take SEO into account in design, and it’s best you are doing it now, then having to go back and fix things. Here are a few ways:
Know your keywords. Do your research ahead of time, and write accordingly. If you organize your site according to those keywords, you’ll ensure that customers find exactly what they are looking for.
Be descriptive. In writing descriptions for the products, be sure to keep key phrase that applies to it around 5-10% of the total text.
Use alt & title tags. Alt tags for the images and title tags for the pages are on-page SEO gold, so take advantage of that and put your keywords in there (just one or two- don’t keyword stuff!).
Optimize for people, not just search engines. When people find your site, you want them to buy, so make sure your landing pages are clear and straightforward. Have links to related products to encourage impulse buys. Have a FAQ so questions can be easily answered and less carts abandoned.
*Write a press release. As you’re probably aware, links go a long way for SEO, and a press release is a great way to get attention and links pointing to your site.

Dean has provided a good answer for this question. If you’re very new to SEO, you may have follow-on questions pertaining to Dean’s answers…like, “how do I know which keywords are best for the homepage and every other page on my website?” or “how do I implement alt and title tags on a given page?”. If so, just start a new question by clicking the “Ask Question” button in the upper right-hand corner with each of these new questions. You can refer back to the original question in your new question for context. Sometimes it’s best to provide an example, so provide an exact URL if that’s the case.
