Domains with dash or without a dash?

Is it better to use domains with a dash between words, or without a dash between words, when it comes to SERP?

For example, when counseling a client who builds bird houses should I recommend he go with paying \$X00 for the already reserved www.birdhousesca.com (purchase from someone else) or just go for www.bird-houses-ca.com (purchase from a registrar for \$8.95)?

I’m not sure that search engines assign a “penalty” for domains that contain more than one word with words separated by a dash (aka hyphen).

From a usability standpoint (users typing in your domain), it’s much easier for people to remember your domain name if it doesn’t have dashes between words.

I can’t actually think of any domains-with-a-dash that are popular. But domain squatting dotcoms definitely is popular :) If the birdhouse building services are region specific – ie the majority of clients are in say, CA then it’s ok to go with a country domain if you can’t get the .com – in fact it can help – if say somebody in the states is looking for birdhouses then google will probably pick an active birdhouse domain in canada over a squatted link referal .dotcom

Agreed. I always go for .com. I’ll only buy another TLD if I have a brand name that I’m trying to protect and the alternates are available.
