Does bolding the typeface of text on a webpage help in search engine optimization? Or is it only useful for emphasizing text to real people who are reading the page?

All other factors being equal, I believe that search engines can recognize bolded text and will assign a small (every little bit of SEO helps) amount of SEO benefit to the bolded text.
This may be a technique that you want to leverage, especially if you’re trying to maximize a particular page for SEO. Here’s what I would do: if you have a specific page written for “non-stick widgets”, then I would use it in the H1 tag, then in the first paragraph use the phrase and bold it.
