Do I need a sitemap.xml for my website?

Also, does a sitemap only work for Google or also other search engines like Bing?

If I have a sitemap.xml and I know that Google has indexed my site, is it necessary to do anything besides update the sitemap.xml? In other words, should I do page submissions also?

Thanks!

XML Sitemaps are good to have and since Google recommends them to help index your site more efficiently, I encourage all of our clients to use them and submit them to google. They do work with other search engines also.
If your sitemap.xml has been submitted and you have confirmed that google is reading it (you can do this through Google’s webmaster tools) then there is no need to do page submissions (I dont know if google even does individual page submissions?)
If you are blogging on your website, you can submit your RSS feed to Google’s Blog search. This is another way of notifying Google that you have new updated content.

Yes, Google does individuals page submissions but they don’t guarantee that it’ll be indexed. Much like their URL submission.

Having a sitemap today is not that big of a deal. Having a sitemap.xml, you can submit it to google, yahoo, live and other search engines.

The thing is that I am not using them anymore. At least not for sites with less than 10k pages. And if you have more than 10k Pages you would need an indexed sitemap (I think that’s what they call it.)

If you have good categorization in your site and some links pointing to the main page. There’s no need for it :)
