Yes and No ;–) Yes becvause I do believe that social media is here vto stay in what kind of way (maybe we will not use Twitter anymore in a couple of years trime from now, but then will be something better than that). So be on the top of that wave and surf well

No, because in spite of the growth of social media, Google still uses and will keep on using I think in the near future, factors like PageRank, domain submission in order to rank your website.

No.  While I heartily advocate the use of social media for promotion & marketing, don’t rely on it for much else.  Look at how social media sites come & go- I bet you could name 10 or more off the top of your head, but search engines are largely the same since Google came onto the scene.  Always go with reliable site submission services and you’ll be safe.

True, I agree Dean.  I wouldn’t solely rely on Social Media, but would it not come before site submission?  I guess I’m asking from a bootstrapping point of view where funds are limited and I’ve exhausted the free resources to get my site indexed.  For instance, I’ll spend money but if I can put up a Facebook Page or Twitter Account and it gets indexed within a week, then I would rather go that route.  Is there anything wrong with doing it this way?

I think it’s best to use a blended approach: 1.) For the time being, search engines still rely on domain submission to discover new sites, especially while few links point towards these new sites. It’s still best practices to go through this route. 2.) Social Media is useful to build these links, and has demonstrated some usefulness at pinging search engine to crawl sites with links to new content.

Ideally, these two techniques will help build search rankings and promote initial traffic to a new website.

No. I firmly believe that any web desiner/developer worth their salt would integrate social media into an website for the purposes of advetisement and social interactivity, but to rely solely on Social Media for ranking in the search engines is futile.

It’s been mentioned before about how Google works, and there is no replacement for good old SEO within the coding of the website.

A good way to get a new site to do as well as it can from the off is to apply basic SEO techniques and integrating social media for the client to use. It should also be stressed to the client that rome wasn’t built in a day and if they want their site to do well, them using Social Media to advertise is a very good and affordable step to take.
