Are automated SEO programs any good?

Are any of the automated SEO programs that do submissions of your entire website useful? Or are they just scams?

Should I just let Google find my websites on it’s own?

With SEO there is no substitute for human input and interaction. Full-on site submissions are also somewhat dated since the engines pick up new sites/pages within hours in most cases.

I would recommend using Google Webmaster Central to support your SEO efforts. You have the ability to submit xml sitemaps and remove/exclude indexed pages if they were improperly indexed or outdated.

I’ve never tried any of them. They all seem like a “get rich quick” scheme — too good to be true.

I’m with Matt with respect to Google Webmaster Central. I’ll even just wait it out for the search engines to visit on their own. As soon as I start a site, I register a “Google Alert” for anything with the title. For example, I registered for a daily alert of anything “Page2Sucks” and was amazed that Google had found this site within 24 hours of going live. (Really puts the pressure on to get the site done!)

This is from the guide by Google for SEO optimization. Refer to the sitemap related part.

“ A simple site map page with links to all of the pages or the most important pages (if you have hundreds or thousands) on your site can be useful. Creating an XML Sitemap file for your site helps ensure that search engines discover the pages on your site. ”

But then, also –

“ Avoid: * letting your HTML site map page become out of date with broken links * creating an HTML site map that simply lists pages without organizing them, for example by subject ”

If you have media or mobile websites, there is more you can do with images-sitemap, video-sitemap and mobile-sitemap.

I’m a fan of DYI Google Webmaster Central.  Also, take advantage of Facebook and Twitter.  I did a site two months ago and it was indexed within 3 days using Twitter and Facebook posts/tweets.  Yes, 3 days!  We also used a blogging campaign geared towards the target audience, and it helped from a link building standpoint.

In my opinion, Facebook and Twitter are both channels that allow for you to gain the exposure and attention of your target market — driving them to your website.

I would recommend exhausting all your FREE options (and there are many out there that are legit) before you go spending money on a ‘flavor of the week or month’ SEO submission service.

A good sitemap and / or good on-page navigation is all you need once you get Google visiting and Google’s webmaster tools gives you everything you need. Plus it can give you some help with any issues they detect.

Of course, that doesn’t help for the other important search engines. Both Bing and Yahoo have their own versions of a webmaster control panel. I recommend you also make the effort to register and use these facilities to announce the presence of your website to them.

I would not trust this process to a tool. It is simple enough to do these 3 submissions personally and the webmaster panels, particularly Google’s, give good value as reward for the effort.
